Natural, Reclaimed & Lab-Grown Diamonds: Selecting the Stone That Tells Your Story
A comprehensive guide to understanding the differences—and why I embrace them all.
When it comes to discussing diamonds, there's on question that almost always arises:
Should I choose natural or lab-grown diamonds?
It's an important consideration and one that only you can make.
When designing and crafting jewellery, the choice of stone involves more than just its origin—whether it's mined from deep within the Earth or created in a lab. Each option carries various pros and cons.
Some diamonds have existed for billions of years. Others may have already served as cherished family heirlooms. There is opportunity to create something remarkable within a specific budget.
The beauty lies in comprehending the distinctions and selecting the one that resonates with you the most.
Diamonds Through Time
Long before the advent of modern technology, every diamond was meticulously cut by hand.
Early cutting didn't have the help of lasers, computer models, or precision machinery. Instead, they painstakingly shaped each crystal, striving to preserve as much of the rough diamond as possible while revealing its inherent beauty.
These early cuts often featured:
- Larger facets
- Softer flashes of light
- Subtle asymmetry
- A sense of character and uniqueness
Each diamond was a reflection of the artisan's decisions during cutting.
Today, diamond cutting is an exacting science. The use of laser mapping and advanced modeling helps to determine the ideal proportions of the stone. It's aim is to maximize brilliance, fire, and sparkle.
Neither method is superior; they simply represent different historical moments and philosophies of craftsmanship.
Among my favorites are two remarkable examples - The Arcot II & The Mirror of Paradise:
The Arcot II
Gifted by the Nawab of Arcot to Queen Charlotte in 1777, the Arcot II has traversed royal collections, adorned the Westminster Tiara, and evolved into the stunning pear-shaped diamond it is today. Over time, it has been skillfully recut to enhance symmetry and eliminate signs of wear while preserving its extraordinary character.
The Mirror of Paradise
The Mirror of Paradise is another exceptional Golconda diamond. Weighing 52.58 carats and graded D color, Internally Flawless, and Type IIa, it is admired for the luminous transparency that epitomizes Golconda diamonds. Like many historic stones, it has been refined into modern proportions while retaining its remarkable origin.
To me, these diamonds convey a beautiful message (alongside their hefty price tags) that jewellery doesn’t have to remain unchanged to preserve its history. This is something that I love to champion within my custom pieces.
The Beauty of Reclaimed Diamonds
This aspect of jewellery making is one of my favorites due to the sentimentality. A diamond may have been cherished for years—or even hundreds of years. Perhaps it's a family heirloom. From a time in your life that you wish to reinterpret. It could have simply spent years safely tucked away, unworn, as the style no longer resonates with you.

Instead of remaining unworn, these diamonds (and often other stones) can be reimagined.
Creating bespoke jewellery by reusing elements of a piece has an inherent circularity in reusing what's already in existence. You can also crediting the existing precious metal towards your new piece and the new design will be cast from recycled materials. It's a win win.
Natural Diamonds
Natural diamonds formed beneath the Earth's surface between one and three billion years ago. Each natural diamond is one-of-a-kind.

Many people opt for them due to their:
- Geological rarity
- Natural origin
- Rich history and provenance
- Emotional significance
While all natural diamonds are remarkable, it's important to remember that certain colors, sizes, origins, and cuts are far more scarce than others.
Lab-Grown Diamonds
Lab-grown diamonds are genuine diamonds.
They possess the same chemical composition, crystal structure, hardness, and optical properties as natural diamonds. You can only tell the difference with advanced gemological equipment.
The difference lies in their origin.

Instead of forming underground over billions of years, they are created in meticulously controlled laboratory environments that replicate the conditions under which natural diamonds grow. Therefore, they can be produced in larger quantities. Lab-grown diamonds are typically more affordable than natural diamonds of similar size and quality.
This opens exciting possibilities within the design if you are hoping for a larger stone, hoping for multiple diamonds in the design, or keeping to a specific budget.
Coloured Diamonds
Nature produces a myriad of incredible coloured diamonds, including champagne, cognac, yellow, pink, black and more. However, many natural fancy-colored diamonds are rare and therefore come at a much higher cost.

Lab-grown colored diamonds also provide beautiful alternatives, making vibrant colours possible while keeping all of the great characteristics diamonds ie: their hardness and shine.
What’s the Best Diamond to Choose?
You may be drawn to natural diamonds in all of their uniqueness that has existed for billions of years. You might have an heirloom piece that you can imbue with new life. Or you might want to maximize budget with a lab-grown diamond or you may simply see a range and then connect with a particular stone.
There are many arguments for and against each. However, my hope is to provide you with the insights needed to make an informed decision. Meaningful jewellery is about what resonates with you and your story at the time of creation.
